Happy birthday to these amazing rock stars that I met and photographed back in the day:

1 August – Dhani Harrison, son of George, who I photographed. Young Dani turns 48 years old and is a great musician in his own right. He played Glastonbury in 2025.

7 August – Rodney Crowell, who I shot together with Emmylou Harris, turns 76 years old.

10 August – Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, blows out 79 candles. 

11 August – Joe Jackson, the talented British singer/songwriter, is 72 on this day. Our session by the Amsterdam canal before his show remains one of my favorites. Joe’s coming to Holland in November!

12 August – Ron Mael, fantastic singer of Sparks, celebrates his 81st birthday. I have a crazy story about their car on my website, called Step Away from the Car!

12 August – Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits also has his birthday. At 77 years old, he is still an amazing guitar player. Great shoot in Amsterdam hotel room. 

16 August – Hey, Barry! Barry Hay of The Golden Earring turns 78 on this day. We used to shout Hey, Barry to each other. Happy birthday, man! 

20 August – Led Zeppelin’s own Robert Plant turns 78 years old. I betcha he can blow all those candles out in one go. Shot with The Runaways in LA.

25 August – Gene Simmons of Kiss turns 77 years old. I was there for their press appearance at Hollywood’s Chinese Theater. It was crazy!

27 August – Glen Matlock was the first bassist for Sex Pistols. He left in 1977 after a fight with Johnny Rotten and was replaced by John Ritchie, better known as Sid Vicious. Luckily, it didn’t stop there and he’s still playing at 70 years old. He used my photo for his book cover and film poster. 

28 August – Hugh Cornwell, lead singer and guitarist of The Stranglers, recently surprised me by popping up in my negatives archive. 50 years later, we scanned and uploaded the images to my website. Check ‘m out! 

31 August – Van “the man” Morrison turns 81 years old. What a wonderful night for a moondance.

Jim Carrol would have celebrated his birthday on August 1, but he sadly passed away in 2009. He was an American poet, author, and punk musician. 

Rick Anderson, co-founding bassist of The Tubes, also had his birthday on August 1, but passed away in 2022, aged 75. Shooting them in L.A. in 1975 for Rolling Stone magazine was a blast!

Eric Carmen was born on August 11. He is best known for his hits “All by myself” from 1975 and Hungry Eyes from 1988. He sadly passed away in 2024.

Dan Fogelberg sadly passed in 2007 but was born on August 13. He came to my hometown of Monnickendam in 1976.

Bob Mayo was best known for his work with Peter Frampton. Unfortunately, Bob passed away in 2004.

One of my musical heroes, David Crosby, passed in 2023. He had his birthday on August 14.

Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy has been gone for a while, but not forgotten. He was born on August 20.

Leon Redbone, who was born on August 26, but passed in 2019, is still an enigma to me. I know I photographed him, the evidence is on my website, but I don’t remember when and where. 

Michael Jackson’s birthday on August 29 is probably tattooed on a lot of people. 

I’m sorry to say I forgot to add Kate Bush’s birthday on July 30th to my list. Sorry Kate!
