August, the height of summer.
I’m listening to, and playing, a lot of music this time of year.
Not too loud, cause I have all the windows open.
But it’s taking me back to the summer of 1967. Sgt Pepper had just come out. My best friend’s older brother took me to a listening party in an apartment in Hollywood. The guy who owned the place had bought the album on vinyl, recorded it on a reel-to-reel tape, put the vinyl album away and said he’d never touch it again.
The tape played over and over and over again. As soon as the tape ended, it automatically switched over and started playing again. Good thing too, cause no one wanted to get up. We were all mesmerized.
You just lay down on the floor, closed your eyes, and listened with intent.
That’s how I still like listening to new music, but now on my headphones.
Whenever I played a record for my daughters when they were young, we used to position the speakers on the floor and lie down between them. No talking until the music was over.
My daughter now has those speakers hooked up in her home. Good memories.
How do you like listening to music you’ve never heard before?
